India 2020, a Consortium of Rights Based Development Organizations, is launched in 2009. In short, based on their learning during the past decades, the country context, the continuing wide spread poverty situation, governance issues and the situation of civil society organizations, and the factors attributable to such a situation, a group of 40 well meaning Rights Based and Development Organizations from across the State of Tamil Nadu have strategically repositioned their Organizations for a larger cause of constructively and professionally working with People, Government, other Civil Society Organizations and Private Sector. The objectives of this Consortium is to a) improve people’s understanding of their rights and responsibilities,; b) build their capacities and skills to constructively work Government in pursuit of their rights; c) improve governance and public resource management to assure coverage, quality and impact (entitlement program, poverty reduction program and basic social services program) ; and d) enhance the leadership, professional and organizational management capacity within the member organizations to meet the changing demands.
Having fully recognized the fact that in large democracy like India, Government is the largest development stakeholder and any isolated efforts in small geographical area have not made significant dent in the poverty and governance situation, the member organizations have refocused and developed strategic approach and rededicated to working with Government, other CSOs and Private Sector for deeper, sustainable and wider development impact.
