II. BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
ABOUT THE DISTRICT:
Dindigul District is historically known for its many factors. There are evidence regarding the Mohal role, British administration apart form traditional Hindu temples are surrounded. It is located in the national highways leading to Bangalore, Trichy, Salem, Kanyakumari, Kodaikanal, the hill station is also located in the district. It is the range of Western gates.
The district is spread over an area of 6266.64 Sq.Km. It comprises of 3 revenue divisions, 7 taluk and 14 Panchayat unions. Its population is 19,18,960.
Educationally, Dindigul is a well-developed and popular city. It has got many High and Higher Secondary Schools to its credit. St.Mary’s Higher Secondary School, a well-disciplined institution is one of the oldest institutions in this city. This district has the credit of having two Universities, viz. Mother Theresa University of Women at Kodaikanal and Gandhigram Rural Deemed University at Gandhigram. Also a number of Engineering Colleges, Arts & Science Colleges, Polytechnics, ITI are available throughout the district.
III.ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE:
SIMCODESS stands for Sirumalai Evergreen Multipurpose Community Development Society. The organization was duly registered as a non-profit making organization under the societies Act 27 of Tamilnadu uin1975. About a decade and more SIMCODESS had reached out to Dindigul District with its major focus of protecting the environment and bring about social transformation through the people’s organization, which is the people’s institution. The society was conferred with FCRA on 24.12.1991 to operate foreign contribution. Dindigul, Athoor, Reddierchatram and Sanarpatti Blocks are covered in Dindigul District. The organization has made specific choices of its target groups. Accordingly SIMCODESS covers four Panchayat unions in Dindigul District.
SIMCODESS was registered in 1990. Since its inception it was involved in various social programmes in Dindigul District such as Small and Marginal Farmers Association, promotion of the organic agriculture, community health animation, community based rehabilitation and women empowerment are the main thrust programmes of SIMCODESS.
In the year 1999, SIMCODESS launched its Organic Agricultural programmes. It had reached out to 60 villages in Dindigul District. These villages are drought-prone areas where rain fed agriculture is the only option left for the survival of the majority of the population.
Here too, SIMCODESS concentrated upon women Empowerment through organization of Mahalir Sangams (Women’s Associations). Especially, women involved in agriculture were enabled to make analysis of the loss of fertility to their lands on accounts of excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
