INTRODUCTION
Kinnar Kastoori (KK) started as an informal community led support group for transgender persons in Mumbai.
In early 2008, a group of community leaders from within TG community with self-willingness to work for the betterment of the community have been identified. Through a very fair and transparent democratic process of community level election, an executive committee and general body has been formed.
The group was involved in different types of community work as organizing and conducting fund raising activities, community mobilization, resource mobilization, referral services for mental and physical health, care and support services for PLWHA, involvement with LGBT groups and organizations, networking with other organization and Government departments for the betterment of TG community.
In early 2010, KK came into the legal acceptance as Society and Trust from the Public Charity Commission, Mumbai.
With the legal acceptance, the existence of KK, being a community based organization (CBO) got more strengthened to work with the primary focus on the Gender, Health and Human right issues of TG community in Mumbai.
BACKGROUND
Enduring stigma and discrimination from the mainstream society, uphold the transgender community in Mumbai to live a vulnerable life leading to increase in commercial sex work, making TGs more exposed to contract HIV infection and other STIs.
Besides the involvement of TGs in Mumbai into sex work as a source of revenue, the fragrance of traditional culture is still found to have a first-rate grip and followed by the major portion of the community members.
Dancing along with giving blessings to the audiences during the special occasions like, marriages, opening or inauguration ceremonies of shops / house, traditional festivals etc and moving from house to house / shop to shop giving blessing asking for money is still followed by the community members as a grip on history of the community.
Considering the dynamics within the community and the level of vulnerability, focused interventions need to be initiated to address the basic issues like gender perceptive, health needs and human rights.
Ongoing efforts for mainstreaming the issues will lead the TG population to live a life with reduced vulnerability, stigma and discrimination. This can be achieved through continuous advocacy and networking efforts at both within and outside the community
GENDER and HEALTH and HUMAN RIGHTS
The cultural approach of the TG community is an obstacle in the way for exposing self to understand the issues related to transferring the gender to opposite sex.
The medical aspect of science can help the upcoming people for gender transfer to understand the authentic facts.
HIV is one of the influencing factors affecting the TG community in Mumbai. Mumbai being a metro city, TGs involving into commercial sex work is rapidly increasing and promoted unconsciously with any substantial hold.
National Behavioral Sentinel Surveillance (BSS) reports from National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) and other research reports from organizations working for TGs, indicates the TG population as most at risk population (MARP) throughout the Nation, which ultimately solicit special focus on prevention and treatment services related to HIV transmission.
Throughout the year, the intervention work for HIV prevention and treatment for the TG population is happening through the existing projects in Mumbai, which need to comprise focus on Gender perceptive, Health needs of pre and post operated TGs, Human rights and other social issues.
It is the state of affairs to remind the population from every segment of mainstream society about the existence of the myths and misconceptions related to accepting the issues related to gender and heath.
There should be an opportunity to ensure that the human rights are protected for TG population to get an access to the mental and physical health and related treatment services.
OBJECTIVE
KK tries to construct an collective and ongoing effort to highlight the existing efforts and to encourage the conception of new methods for mainstreaming techniques.
