Vikram-Rai - SATTVA

Vikram is a computer science engineer from BITS, Pilani. He has worked for 6 years in the IT sector in Bangalore.

First-Steps:

After working for a couple of years, he started exploring other avenues to engage himself in. He started volunteering with some NGOs in Bangalore. He was deeply moved by the opportunities available to serve and was very excited by his contribution. He started getting more deeply involved and took up larger roles like managing programs and volunteers.

He took the next step, along with a few like-minded people and co-founded, in 2006, ITIHAS, short for “I think I have a solution”. Through ITIHAS they provided pro-bono services to NGOs like technology support and business plan preparation. ITIHAS started publishing a monthly e-magazine focused on social issues called Sattva. Every edition picked up a social issue and portrayed the various NGOs and individuals focusing on that issue. The magazine had a modern design and conveyed the message in an engaging manner. Soon the magazine found a growing readership, especially among the urban youth.

Current:

Vikram co-founded Sattva in 2008.

Sattva is a social enterprise based out of Bangalore. They have three main divisions: media, research, and consulting. The media arm aims to be the strong voice of social development in India and bring out high quality content on developmental issues. The research division provides relevant, actionable insights to social organizations and enterprises. They publish case studies, white papers and impact assessment reports. Sattva Consulting delivers consulting and program management services to NGOs, corporations, investors, donors and foundations.

Achievements:

Sattva has been working on some very interesting assignments and seeing some early success too.

For example, they helped some large MNCs in Bangalore streamline their CSR program and bring in measured impact which was missing earlier.

In another case, they connected a sports good manufacturer and an NGO which was using sport as a medium to improve quality of life of slum children. The result has been a win-win solution for all participants.

Recently, Sattva developed a case study on Goonj, a pan-Indian NGO focused on bringing change through serving clothing needs. The case study was selected top 10 among 200 entries in a national competition.

Challenges:

He says that people have a lot of misconceptions about the social sector. Due to the lack of proper sources of information and means of engaging the common person with issues around social sector, there are stereotypes which are formed in the minds of people as to how this sector works, the kind of people involved, the professionalism etc. He rebuffs such views stating this sector has some of the most complicate challenges; extremely talented and motivated people are working on these issues.

He jokes that he has trouble explaining how his company makes money serving the social sector because of these misconceptions J

Entrepreneur experience:

A social entrepreneur needs the same basic qualities required of any entrepreneur: focus, passion, robustness & discipline. It is just that entrepreneurial abilities are being used to address social problems. The task is just as tough.

Unlike developed countries like US, where social entrepreneurship is a more mature field with large career opportunities, in India this field is still emerging. So the challenges as well as the potential & excitement are all the more.

Future:

Sattva’s and Vikram’s vision is to realize equilibrium in social change. He would like to act as an “accelerator” towards that vision. In 2-3 years, he would like to see involvement in social issues brought to the mainstream.

Message:

There are multiple ways one can contribute: teaching computers, organizing events, translating text, marathon participation, raising funds, etc. He advises all to start actively volunteering. NGOs face issues needing cross-functional solutions.

Speaking to existing volunteers would clear a lot of doubts and would help find volunteering opportunities of one’s interest.
