Introduction
The AWARD Trust was established due to the need identified by the seven tribes in the Nilgiris District. The eight tribes in Nilgiris-District include Kasavar, Thodas, Irrulas, Kottas, Kattunaikas, Bettakurumbas, Mullakurumbas and Paniyas. The following five types of tribes “Kasavar, Kattunaikas, Paniyas, Bettakurumbas and Mullakurumbas” are concentrating in the Gudalur and Pandalur taluck of the Nilgiris District. The social structure within and inter-dependence between tribes have declined, as have traditional skills and many other aspects of their way of life, including dress, dialects and names. There can be many reasons for these changes such as education, the felt need to integrate or to be like every body else social stigma, cinema, culture or the availability of Government support.
The objective is to integrate these seven tribes into the main stream of economic and social development. Out of the 36 schedule tribe communities in the state of Tamil Nadu, eight tribes are in the Nilgiris District, have been identified as primitive population of schedule tribes exceeds 50% of the total population is declined as integrated tribes are not reached in development programs.
The AWARD Trust identified the basic needs from tribal people are
- Lack of basic education
- Personal Hygiene
- Chewing Tobacco
- Alcoholism
- Child Labour
- Early Marriage
Staffs visited the tribal village of Nellakotta Panchayat twice a month and gave them awareness on those identified problems.
Thus, AWARD Trust (Adivasi Welfare and Rural Development) was established on 21st of July 2009, and registered under the Indian Trust Act, Registration No. 226/2009. AWARD Trust founders Ms. Sobha. M (MSW) Secretary, Mr. Surendran P.R President, and Dr. Lokesha (Medical Officer) are committed to Community Development programs in Pandalur and Gudalur Taluk. The community has emerging social concerns, value of education, service learning. The need of Tribal Development is to reduce the gap between the tribal and the non-tribal population with the respect to economic, education and social status.

• To strengthen networks and linkages between among tribal and non-tribal to foster and sustain the impact of development initiatives.
• To advocate the rights and needs of the tribal communities.
