Vision
Janhit Foundation is an independent, non-profit NGO, actively engaged in the promotion of human welfare through environmental protection since 1998.
Our mission is to empower local communities to take action to preserve their environment and natural resources for themselves and future generations.
We achieve this though community participation in our projects and activities and ensuring local people are consulted throughout the process of development.
We strive for a sustainable future for mankind based on social justice and believe that this can only be achieved though the up-holding of all human rights and the rule of law.
MISSION
• Provision of safe, sufficient and sustainable water resources for all
• Restoring and conserving agricultural land; providing sustainably produced nutritious and healthy food for both current and future generations.
• Prevent and reduce the pollution of natural resources and promote their sustainable use; thus ensuring that our environment maintains its biodiversity and does not pose a risk to human health.
• Empowerment of marginalized communities to safeguard their human rights and improve their local environment.
Janhit Foundation undertakes this work through scientific research, campaigns, advocacy and grass-root level community involvement.
As a public interest organization the Janhit Foundation focuses on strengthening local communities through their active participation in the decision making process to achieve sustainable development for the community as a whole. We believe that environmental degradation can only be addressed adequately if local people are empowered in decision making at all levels and have control over their natural resources.
Geographic and Thematic Focus Areas
Janhit Foundation conducts its work in Western Uttar Pradesh and specifically within the districts of Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad and Muzaffarnagar. However, we have previously worked in the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana.
- Protection & Preservation of Natural Water Resources
- Provision of Potable Drinking Water to Marginalized Communities
- Promotion of Organic Agriculture
- Prevent the Agricultural Use of Chemical Fertilizers and Pesticides
- Enhance Livelihoods through Alternative Crop Production
- Provision of Meerut CHILDLINE Service – a 24/7 helpline for children in distress
- Informal Education to Impoverished Slum Communities
- Organize and Manage Human Rights Awareness Programs
OUR WORK
Restoring Daurala – Hell on Earth
The town of Daurala’s drinking water supply was seriously contaminated with heavy metals, including arsenic, lead and chromium. Contamination was due to industrial premises releasing their untreated waste directly into the groundwater. In conjunction with local industry and the Blacksmith Institute, Janhit Foundation changed industrial waste discharge practices and constructed deep tube wells, operated by electrical submersibles to supply the entire town with potable water.
Spreading Water Literacy on Wheels
Janhit Foundation is currently engaged in running a Water Literacy programme in Noida District, facilitated by Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) and funded by ADOBE India Systems Ltd. The project aims to raise awareness amongst school children on the importance of drinking water quality and better water governance. In addition to this rain water harvesting structures are being installed in the ten most water deficient schools.
Natural Pond Restoration – Kutte Ka Talaab and Sidh Baba Kodia
Janhit Foundation has undertaken a Ministry of Water sponsored survey of all the natural water resources in the region, showing quality and quantity to be extremely poor.
Consequently, in association with CAF and Coca Cola India, Janhit Foundation has revived and restored two natural ponds in Ghaziabad and Modinagar.
Enhancing Livelihoods through the promotion of Aromatic Plant Cultivation
This project aimed to introduce 800 farmers to the concept of Aromatic Plant Cultivation, to provide them with an alternative income option. The project was successfully completed in 2012.
This project was undertaken in conjunction with Oxfam and has improved rural livelihoods, whilst enhancing the natural environment through the promotion of organic agriculture.
The Elimination of the Agricultural Use of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
Funded by the UN Development Programme, Janhit Foundation undertook an agricultural awareness programme to eliminate the agricultural use of toxic chemicals, Lindane and Endosulphan. Over 300 farmers participated, with approximately 95% of these now farming organically.
Enviro-Green Centre
Supported by the Global Greengrants Fund (GGF) an ’Enviro-Green Centre’ was established in the school premises of City Vocational Public School, Meerut. Saplings of different species and herbal plants have been planted and a rainwater harvesting structure is now functioning. The centre is managed and maintained through the active participation of the students.
Meerut CHILDLINE
The Meerut Childline service was founded in 2007 and is operated by Janhit Foundation. The service is a 24/7 helpline (Dial 1098) for children in need or distress, for those subjected to child labour and for those experiencing drug problems or other issues.
