1. BRIEF ABOUT ORGANISATION

Gramin Vikas Trust (GVT) is a NGO, Registered on 4th May 1999 under the Indian Trust Act, funded by one of the country’s largest fertilizer cooperatives (KRIBHCO). Gramin Vikas Trust (GVT) has been developing innovative solutions for the livelihoods security of poor and marginalized people since the early 1990′s. Western India Rainfed Farming Project and the counterpart Eastern India Rainfed Farming Project have been two of its leading flagship interventions that have helped GVT stretch its reach into Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in the west and Orissa, Jharkhand and West Bengal in the east.
GVT has implemented its projects in some of the most telling conditions on the country’s landscape, where poverty has been at its worst and ecological conditions most hostile. Yet, these have proved a boon to GVT, which, through sheer perseverance and sustained innovation, has developed benchmarks in rural development. In its pursuit for excellence, GVT has partnered with hosts of agencies including DFID, UNDP, Rockefeller Foundation, European Union, government departments, research institutions, non governmental organizations and village communities.

In collaborated with Infrastructure Leasing & Finance Services (IL&FS), Mumbai, Gramin Vikas Trust has introduced the Infrastructure Certification and Advance Rural Entrepreneurship (ICARE) programme designed by Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad which is based on E-learning / multi media developed especially for the rural youth.

Description of the Project The project aimed to enhance the livelihoods of the poorest and most socially excluded communities in the country, who live in hilly, remote, drought-prone, deforested and eroded region of India. The project devised participatory demand-led approaches to farming systems development that substantially enhanced the livelihoods of the target communities in the seven states. The main aim of the EIRFP is to initiate a process of sustainable development of Renewal Natural Resources for livelihood promotion of the marginalized people dependent on rainfed upland agriculture.

Description of the Project The project envisages improving the food security and livelihood of poor farmers of Eastern India by rapidly delivering the seeds of new varieties to small farmers. Regularly conducting Farmers Managed participatory trials in agriculture crops such as, Rice, Maize, Black gram, Pigeon Pea, Chickpea, etc. and released four varieties of crops.

Remark • Wider dissemination of BVD-109 & BVD-110 paddy varieties

Description of the Project The PACS Programme stems from the overall aim of the UK’s Department For International Development (DFID) to reduce global poverty and promote sustainable development. The objective of the project was to empower and improve the livelihood of poor men and women in Jharkhand. Project focused on strengthening the awareness and capabilities of poor people, so that they can demand and exercise their rights – political, economic, social and human – to improve their own lives. In other words, the programme focused on the demand side, rather than on supply side activities such as building infrastructure. The programme aimed to achieve these goals through a network of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs). CSOs were deliberately chosen as agents of change. The secondary objective of the programme is to strengthen the capacity and role of Civil Society Organisations working for the poor which ensured that the benefits of the programme are sustained.

Description of the Project Introduction of integrated Farming System for Enhancing Sustainable Rural Livelihood Security other than crops in real predicament in Rain fed Area of Sahebganj and Pakur Districts in Jharkhand. The main objective of the project is to provide new strategies for sustainable system for crop production and development of farming models and diversification in farming system through crops, vegetables, fruits, aquaculture and organic farming. Livelihood improvement by diversification of second crop on mono-crop area, vegetable production, aquaculture, organic farming, dairy, poultry & piggery development and medicinal plant cultivation.

Description of the Project Improving livelihoods in tribal areas of India through sustained access to technologies in rain fed areas. All households in a village were provided simultaneously with seed and knowledge of varieties and their maintenance. By examining the farmers’ varietal innovation system over all rice ecosystems, and by integrating the popularization of upland varieties with lowland varieties of rice and with horse-gram for intercropping, a greater impact is achieved.
