BACKGROUND OF OUR ORGANIZATION:
Howrah, under the Kolkata Mega City, covering the left stretch of Grand Trunk Road from Bally to Panchpara of Howrah Municipal Corporation, is a haven for a number of Jute Mills, small-scale and sick industries. Once known as the Sheffield of the East, the region has fallen into obscurity marked by a grinding cycle of endemic poverty, unchecked population growth and overall paucity of development initiatives. A once thriving industrial zone has now become a vast belt for sick and closed factories with feeble economic activity. The economic scenario is at a standstill owing to a marked instability in the unskilled employment sector. Also the landless and marginal farmers, wage laborers and other job-seekers migrate from adjacent region to the slums and squatter settlement of Howrah with the hope of locating greener pastures. This unabated exodus along with their family members has further exerted great deal of pressure on the slums and squatters of Howrah. Consequently, the human development indicators for the areas reveal a stark picture. It is a fact that Dominique Lapierre was inspired to write City Of Joy the famous book by visiting one of the biggest slums of Howrah called Pilkhana. The other slums of Howrah named as Ghusri, Tikiapara, P.M.Busti, Lichu Bagan New Basti, Chowra Busti including Pilkhana are famous to keep their existence by violent activities and send their children and women to fight against anyone including administration when they come to demolish their structures which may be legal or illegal. To save their lives by selling liquor, drugs and pulling rickshaws and be a part of raising slogans on behalf of political parties. To be proud of being called the members of any Mafia group as having a feather of bravery in their cap and suggest everyone to live with “Rela” (rough and tough) SEED has been working to bring difference in the lives of children in difficult circumstances, working children and street children and at the same time implement the strategic plan to bring them back in mainstreaming life. In order to protect these children from all other sorts of abuse and being mislead by negative environment available to the places where they used to live ,we have given alternatives like shelters, homes and some have brought a big difference in their lives with efforts of our volunteers and professionals approach in a secular process. Of course these efforts are like a drop in the vast ocean and it becomes meaningless when we talk about child friendly city and Minority with special coverage of Sachar Committee Report. It is the fact that so many slums, squatter colonies and pavement are breeding a number of children who are prone to crime and being lured to run out of mainstream and being called extremist. The future of nation is indirectly or directly at threat due to such activities which are taking their childhood and innocence. We have big responsibility to check their growth in this way and reach to them with strategically plan to bring them in mainstream. SEED is already 24 Hours working at Howrah Station for Home placement to Children ,Follow-up to Children , mainstreaming to Children and Shelter provide .
Mission and Objective:
1. To identify the areas and the target groups
2. To identify the issues and problems which have affected in their lives
3. To aware and sensitize the secondary stakeholders
4. Bring participatory approach in finding solutions of the problems and train some volunteers to act as peer group for implementation of project
5. Wean the children away from their negative practices and put them in existing schools, madrasas with interventions on education (traditional with modern), health (traditional and modern) and socio economic condition
6. Put in place the remedial measures, the life skills lessons and/or trainings for these children including their families
7. Make the area child friendly and be a part of child protection policy
The project will care the children who are prone to crime specially and
Generally children of slums so that they may be rehabilitated
in mainstream without delay
CONCEPT LETTER ON GIRLS AND BOY’S,
SEED is a registered, secular non-government development organization operating in Howrah district of West Bengal. It was formed in the year 1991for the development of slum children of Howrah.
Howrah, under the Kolkata mega city covering the left stretch of G.T.Road from Bally to Panchpara of Howrah Municipal Corporation, is a haven for a number of jute mills, small scale and sick industries. Once known as the Sheffield of the east, the region has fallen into obscurity marked by a grinding cycle of endemic poverty, unchecked population growth, and over all paucity of development initiatives Once a thriving industrial zone has now become a vast belt for sick and closed factories with feeble economic activity. The economic scenario is in a standstill condition owing to a marked instability in the unskilled employment sector. Also the landless and marginal farmer, wage laborer and other job seekers migrated from adjacent region to the slums and squatter settlement of Howrah with the hope of locating greener pasture. This unabated exodus along with their family members has further exerted great deal of pressure on the slums and squatter of Howrah. Consequently, the human development indicators for the areas reveal a stark picture.
SEED believe action as a force for change; to protect children at risk, to protect their human rights and to prevent future generations from suffering the same lack of choices that presently force children onto the street. We believe that it is possible to achieve better lives for vulnerable children and believe that the way to do this is through the children themselves. SEED have a dream to see the societal changes that the children have a better option: the chance to shape their own lives in the manner of their choosing.
There are so many objectives aiming to reach for the development of the children who are orphan, homeless, helpless, and hopeless living in the platform of Howrah and streets of the Howrah.
